It is the single most useful number in this category, because it counts everyone who arrived — not just the people who were already committed enough to type something.

Most form statistics pages are compilations of compilations. A figure gets quoted, requoted, and eventually attributed to whoever quoted it last, with the sample size and the year quietly falling off along the way. Every statistic below was checked against the organisation that actually published it, on 27 August 2026, and carries what that organisation says about its own data.

Four widely-circulated figures did not survive that check — two of them from our own product category. They are documented in their own section rather than buried, because knowing which numbers not to cite is worth as much as the numbers themselves.

What is the average form abandonment rate?

Between 34% and 55%, depending on which population you count. Both numbers are correct and they measure different things, which is the single most common source of confusion in this category.

Zuko's benchmarking reports two distinct rates:

The 21-point gap between them is people who looked at the form and left without touching it. If you are diagnosing a form, that gap is usually where the money is — and it is invisible to any analytics setup that only fires on first interaction.

Which should you benchmark against? View-to-completion, in almost every case. It is the number that reflects what the form costs you, and it is the one Zuko itself describes as commonly used as the conversion rate.

Do mobile funnels convert better than forms?

Almost certainly yes on paid social traffic — but nobody has published a credible number for it, and the figures usually quoted do not survive a source check. What the data does establish is where the loss happens on mobile, which is enough to reason about honestly.

Start with the measurable part. Zuko's device breakdown puts view-to-completion at 47% on desktop, 42% on mobile and 41% on tablet — a consistent five-point mobile deficit. That sounds survivable until you weigh it: Statcounter put mobile at 52.57% of global web traffic in July 2026, and paid social skews considerably harder to mobile than the web average. The majority of arrivals land on the device where forms perform worst.

Now the part that points at the mechanism. Two of Zuko's findings sit awkwardly together unless you read them as one story:

  • Field count is not the lever. Zuko's stated conclusion is that "number of form fields is not necessarily correlated with completion rate." Local government forms average 71 inputs and post the highest completion rate in the dataset.
  • But perceived effort, assessed in the first minute, is devastating. Comparison forms — averaging 36 required inputs — are abandoned after roughly 50 seconds. That is people opening a form, sizing up the work in front of them, and leaving before typing.

If length itself doesn't predict abandonment but seeing the length does, then the variable that matters is how much work is visible at the moment someone decides whether to start. That is precisely what a multi-step form changes: one question per screen, answered by tapping rather than typing, with the offer established before anything is asked. We are not going to put a percentage on that, because no honest one exists yet. The vendor claims in this category range from 86% to 700% and none of them cites a study — see numbers this category gets wrong. The mechanism is well-evidenced; the magnitude is not.

Which form fields cause the most abandonment?

Passwords, by a clear margin. Zuko's field-level data puts the mean abandonment rate at the password field at 10.5%, ahead of email at 6.4% and phone number at 6.3%.

Zuko also measures time-in-field: the name field takes 3.5 seconds on average, the address field 7.4 seconds. Fields that take longer are not automatically the ones people quit at — password is fast to type and still the most abandoned, because the friction is cognitive, not mechanical.

The practical read: the fields that hurt are the ones that ask people to create or retrieve something rather than recall it. Forced account creation is the same problem in a different costume, and Baymard measures it directly — 18% of abandoners cite being asked to create an account.

Does making a form shorter actually help?

Not reliably, and this is the most misrepresented claim in the category. Zuko's own stated conclusion from its dataset is that the "number of form fields is not necessarily correlated with completion rate."

Its industry data makes the point uncomfortably well. Local government forms average 71 inputs and take 8.5 minutes — and post the highest view-to-completion rate in the dataset at 85%. Contact forms, which are usually a handful of fields, sit at 38% starter-to-completion and 9% view-to-completion.

The difference is motivation, not length. Someone renewing a permit will cross a 71-field form because they have no alternative. Someone idly filling in a contact form will not cross five fields if the value of doing so is unclear.

Where length genuinely is measurable as a problem is checkout, because there the intent is already established and friction is pure loss. Baymard Institute finds the average US checkout displays 23.48 form elements (14.88 actual fields) when its usability testing puts the optimum at 12–14 elements (7–8 fields) — roughly double what it should be.

So the honest version of the advice: don't cut fields, cut unjustified fields, and establish the value before the ask rather than after it.

Why do people abandon checkouts?

Cost, mostly — not form design. Baymard's abandonment-reason data, excluding respondents who were "just browsing":

Two of the top five — forced account creation and checkout complexity, together accounting for 35% of citations — are form problems you can fix without touching pricing or logistics. Baymard estimates a 35.26% increase in conversion rate is achievable through improved checkout design.

How long do people spend on forms before abandoning?

It varies by form type more than by anything else. Zuko reports checkout forms average 3 minutes 21 seconds to complete and registration forms 1 minute 35 seconds.

Comparison forms — insurance quotes and similar — are the outlier worth knowing about: abandoned after roughly 50 seconds on average, against an average of 36 required inputs. That is people opening a form, sizing up the work, and leaving. It is the clearest evidence in the dataset that perceived effort, assessed within the first minute, does real damage — and the reason funnels that reveal one question at a time hold people that a wall of 36 fields does not.

Numbers this category gets wrong

Two figures circulate widely and could not be reproduced at the primary source on 27 August 2026. Both appear in high-ranking roundups.

1. "FormAssembly: 68% completion rate, based on 1.6 billion form interactions." The 1.6 billion figure is real — FormAssembly published its analysis of 1.6 billion user interactions in September 2025. But the completion rate stated on FormAssembly's own page is 33%, not 68%.

2. "Zuko 2026: desktop 54.48% vs mobile 47.53%." Zuko's own published benchmarking page states 47% desktop, 42% mobile, 41% tablet. The higher pair may come from a different report or segment, but it is not what Zuko's public page shows, and we could not locate a Zuko source for it.

3. "Multi-step forms convert 86% higher than single-step forms." This is the most-repeated claim in the funnel category and we could not find an origin for it. It appears across roundups with no named researcher, no sample size and no methodology — the pages carrying it attribute it to nobody. We build multi-step funnels for a living and we still cannot cite this figure.

4. "Mobile funnels deliver up to 700% higher conversion rates than landing pages." Published by Perspective. Checked on 27 August 2026: none of the these carries a study, dataset, sample size or methodology. They are vendor marketing claims, not research. The only externally-sourced figure on that page is a Statista mobile-usage statistic.

Against Zuko's benchmarks, above 45% view-to-completion puts you ahead of the aggregate, and above 66% starter-to-completion means people who engage with your form are finishing it at better than average. Compare against your form type rather than the overall average — a 38% starter-to-completion contact form is at benchmark, while the same number on an application form (benchmark 75%) is badly underperforming.

What is the difference between form abandonment rate and bounce rate?

Bounce rate counts people who leave the page without meaningful interaction. Form abandonment counts people who engaged with the form and did not submit it. A form can have an excellent bounce rate and a terrible abandonment rate, which is the most common diagnostic pattern for forms that look inviting and ask too much.

Is 70% form abandonment normal?

70.22% is the documented average for shopping cart abandonment specifically, averaged by Baymard across 50 studies from 2006 to 2025. It is frequently misquoted as a general form abandonment figure, which it is not. For general web forms, the comparable number is 55% view-to-completion abandonment.

Do multi-step forms reduce abandonment?

Tablet, marginally, at 41% view-to-completion — just below mobile at 42%. Desktop leads at 47%. Because tablet traffic volume is small for most sites, mobile is where the losses concentrate in absolute terms.
